small meaningful things

resonance through comments

Someone left a comment on my note about age, time, and art – went over to look at his art blog and subscribed to it. It is encouraging and comforting to see someone working on their art at a later age too. I also enjoy seeing people’s work-in-progress.

This is why I like having comments, though I may not have the capacity to respond to them in a timely manner. Taking the time to leave a comment creates this tiny temporary moment of resonance, and it is very interesting to get to know who they are, how they think and what they do. More often than not, I like their stuff too.

And these comments serve as an on-going encouragement for me, since I cope with loneliness all the time. They are also linked to a very specific context so I know what people are relating to. I don’t get a lot of feedback on my writing so these are really meaningful to me.

I also like the idea of having a guestbook.

The later age art practice makes me think of @balletmisfits (on Instagram) : she took her first ballet class at 37 and now, ten years later, has become a ballet teacher. She’s my queen, and when I find myself struggling as a newly qualified ballet teacher of 35 years old (which is at least 10 years older than my comrades — I used to write documentation for a software company), I remember that, if I were her, I would still have to wait two years to start practicing ballet altogether (not even teaching it). That’s really comforting and encouraging, as you say.

I’ve been reading your blog for some weeks, so I guess it was time for a “nice to meet you”.

thank you for sharing another inspiring story! and nice to meet you too, thanks for reading my blog. 🙂

  2. Thanks for the mention, Winnie!

Commenting on blogs isn’t as popular as it used to be, but I still really like it and think it can provide genuine connections between people—and, like you say, encouragement. Although it’s more hassle, I far prefer blogging and commenting on blogs to being on social networks. 😊
