Came across this quote while reading “Born to run“:
Poetry, music, forests, oceans, solitude—they were what developed enormous spiritual strength. I came to realize that spirit, as much or more than physical conditioning, had to be stored up before a race.
(– Herb Elliott, Olympic champion and world-record holder in the mile who trained in bare feet, wrote poetry, and retired undefeated)
…and it immediately reminded me of this note I wrote on storing vs mortgaging energy. I like noticing obscure synchronicities in the media I consume, and I really like the idea of writing a chain of notes (and other formats) linked to each other. This would make it easy for me to gather thoughts and ideas bundled around a concept.
I guess on a meta level this is what this website is about? In a way it stores my energy and spirit in a form that can be accessed even without my person. I just need to remember to store them instead of squandering it away, taking them for granted that they will stay or reappear some day.
The human spirit – what that is still unaccounted for whenever we talk about self-improvement, health, medical science, economies. We can see a heart rate, measure electrical activity from the brain, but what is it that forms the spirit? I don’t mean “spirit” in a supernatural way, but whatever part of our human consciousness that propels us to express our aliveness.
